About CityExpenses

What this is

CityExpenses helps you work out what a job in an Indian city must pay — monthly living cost first, then tax-adjusted CTC, then compare offers. Calculators run in your browser. There are no user accounts.

Built and maintained by Nitin Goyal.

Tools

  • CTC calculator — enter monthly lifestyle (rent, food, commute, and the rest) and get a cost total plus a 33% planning buffer. That is not tax. Optional city presets are starting points you can override.
  • Tax Hub — FY 2026-27 guides, a 493-term glossary, and about ten tax calculators (income tax, freelancer, capital gains, ESOP, home loan, and more).
  • Offer Manager — save and compare offer letters on this device only (browser localStorage, max 10). Not synced. Not stored on our servers.

Estimates vs tax logic

Lifestyle and rent presets in the calculator are estimates. They are not live market prices. Type your own numbers when you have them — your figures beat presets.

Tax content was reviewed against official Indian income-tax sources in September 2026: the Income-tax Act, 2025 (Act No. 30 of 2025), in force 1 April 2026, as amended by the Finance Act, 2026, and CBDT / Income Tax Department notifications and circulars. Tax content on this site is for FY 2026-27.

FAQ

Do you store my salary or offers?

No. Calculators run in the browser. Offer Manager uses localStorage on that device only. We do not store or sell calculator inputs or offers on a server.

Is this a cost-of-living data hub?

No. City and area encyclopedia pages are gone. Optional city presets still exist inside the calculator as starting points.
